  • Question 1: What should be the ratio of accelerator (Cobalt) and hardener (MEK P.) in polyester and gelcoat applications?

    Besides polyester and gelcoat quality, cobalt and MEK P. ratio also affects the quality of the product. The required ratio stated in certificate of conformity sent by the manufacturer with each dispatched product should be taken into consideration. Cobalt ratio of the product is sometimes used more than needed. Thus, necessary amount of MEK P. cannot be used. This is the main reason of fast aging. The most important point is to keep MEK P. ratios constant and adjust cobalt ratio according to seasonal conditions. Please contact us if you have further questions.

  • Question 2: Which solvent should I use for thinning gelcoat and polyester?

    Parameters such as product temperature, environment temperature (room temperature) and mould temperature directly affect our production. During application if these values are lower than required, you can use styrene. Styrene ratio should be around 2-3%. Overly usage defects mechanical values and the product might get yellow and fragile. Please contact us if you have further questions.

  • Question 3: How thick should the film be during gelcoat application?

    Applying gelcoat with appropriate thickness is crucial in the sense of opacity. Thickness should be 0.6-0.8mm for brush type gelcoats, 0.3-0.5mm for spray type gelcoats. Please contact us if you have further questions.

  • Question 4: Can I catalyse resin with Acetone?

    No. Do not ever try to catalyse any resin or topcoat using anything other than the Catalyst M50. Always follow the recommended guidelines in the installation guide depending on the weather conditions. If you do not do this the resin and topcoat will not set and stay wet and tacky.   • Question 5: Is Polyester Gelcoat compatibis with Vinyl Ester Resin?

    Vinyl ester resins share the same cross-linking monomer (styrene) to polyester resins and Gelcoats so they are compatible with each other. You can mix the two together if you wanted to. Vinyl ester resins and blends of vinyl ester and polyester resins are osten used as a blister resistant skin coat behind polyester gelcoats for boats etc. Please contact us if you have further questions.

  • Question 6: Which type of gelcoat should I use for bathtub and kitchen sink production?

    You can use General purpose resin for such production. For high performance GİN-413 spray type, GİN-313 brush type gelcoats should be used. By these gelcoat types your product will be glossy and resistant to yellowing. Please contact us if you have further questions.

  • Question 7: I am having trouble matching the new gelcoat with the existing gelcoat?

    Colour matching is always difficult unless you have the manufacturers RAL color code. Please contact us if you have further questions.

  • Question 8: Can epoxy be pigmented or tinted?

    Yes. The same pigments or tints typically used for polyester resins can be used. Loading of the tint should be very low (less than 1%) or it may effect the mechanical characteristic of the resin. Please contact us if you have further questions.

  • Question 9: What safety precautions are recommended when using resin ?

    i) First and foremost, always avoid contact with your skin. wear disposable gloves. If you do get resin on your skin, clean with soap and water only
    ii) It's best to wear googles during resin applications to protect your eyes. If you get resin in your eyes, do not rub - flush with water repeatedly and seek medical attention.
    iii) Work in a well ventilated area. Do not breathe in resin fumes directly, even if you do not detect much odor. If you sand the resin once cured, avoid breathing in the sanding dust.

  • Question 10: What is important while selecing pigment paste of product coloring?

    First of all, request a certificate or text from the supplier that the pigment paste doesn’t contain prohibited materials that European Union published. If your products will be used in sectors that require high quality such as marine, aqua park, automotive, etc., than pigment paste must be high performance. In other words, pigment powder should be UV, temperature, chemical and water resistant and must be at the highest quality level. Please contact us if you have further questions.

  • Question 11: What should my pigment paste ratio be in gelcoat?

    For opac pigment paste sup to 5-15% can be used to attain required opacity . Yet, pigment paste more than needed might cause surface hardness problem (barcohol) in products. Transparent pigment paste usage ratio should be 0.01-1%. Please contact us if you have further questions.

  • Question 12: Can I use other companies pigment pastes with İLKESTER gelcoat?

    Qualities of gelcoat and pigment paste directly affect your product’s quality. Special additives are used in İLKESTER gelcoat and pigment paste. These additives are tested in laboratories before the process. As a qualified firm, we believe that mixtures of different brands is not effective for product quality. Instead of mixing transparent gelcoat and pigment paste manually, buying colored gelcoat directly will carry the product quality to the maximum level.   • Question 13: Can I spray gelcoat and resins?

    Yes. However you must use the correct equipment such as a gelcoat sprayer. You also need to use resins and gelcoats designed for spray use. Please contact us if you have further questions.

  • Question 14: Are İLKESTER gelcoats available in verious colors?

    Yes. They are available to match most any color shade desired, from whiles to deep colors. Please contact us if you have further questions.

  • Question 15: What are the major uses of fiberglass in industry?

    Fiberglass is used in many industries, such as: Boats, Cars, Trucks, Signs, Architectural replicas, Aeroplane parts, Bus parts, Rail wagon parts, Engine Covers, Water tanks, Aquaparks, Cooling towers, Wind turbines, etc. Please contact us if you have further questions.

  • Question 16: Why is "Quality control under the laboratory" important?

    This allows important ship/no ship decisions to be made by technically oriented employess and quarantees that only the highest quality products reach our customers. Please contact us if you have further questions.

  • Question 17: I face cracking problems of casting polyester products while assembling with screw or nail. How can I solve this problem?

    It is natural to face that problem with classic casting polyester. Following R&D studies, İlkalem has specially produced, specific filler type P-512TD coded product. With this product you can accomplish any assembling. This product is mostly preferred for mirror, picture frame and furniture accessories productions.   • Question 18: What are the advantages of epoxy over polyester resins?

    There are many advantages including being non-flammable, not exhibiting a strong odor and being up to 25% stronger than their polyester counterparts. In marine applications, epoxies are far superior in resisting water absorption and are less likely to blister. Epoxies are more flexible and adhere better to all surfaces.
